Santa Fe
The first stop in the morning was Cadillac Ranch. It was a muddy mess but people continued to file in early in the morning. There is not much left of the half emerged Cadillacs and the pool of water added more to the whole bizarre site. The 50 year old Cadillacs are twisted eroded pieces of steel covered with graffiti. The Constitution Man stands right off of route 40. The mysterious roadside attractions of yesteryear don’t have the power they originally conveyed. They are somewhat out of place in the modern world where oddities like a carney show of freaks and odd balls. We got off the highway at Tucumari to see a little of Route 66. There was really only abandoned businesses overgrown with grass. Some of the old signs are deteriorating but still have character. The prairie turned to mesa and the view was open plains as far as the eye could see. Miles away we could see snow capped mountains. There was only nature for hours before we got to Santa Fe. Santa Fe is a old settlement of abode dwellings. It was quaint. The old trail is now a upscale shopping district with galleries and clothing shops. We spent the day eating, seeing the shops and enjoying the landscape. We stayed at the Pecos Trail Inn, the first place we stayed that wasn’t a Hampton Inn.
